Grandma Christensen

Grandma lives in a retirement community. They have a family home evening each Monday evening, and every December, our extended family goes up to perform. I don't really enjoy performing. But I enjoy singing with my sisters and watching my family perform. Growing up, we used to gather around the piano and sing and sing at Christmastime. We continued this in our adult years. But a few years ago, Mom and Dad decided that they had no use for a piano in their home. Their remodel is beautiful, but I miss the piano. I miss the sponatneous singing and playing with my sisters. But, life changes and that's okay.

Last night I was so impressed. A lot of my nieces and nephews are developing into accomplished musicians. My favorite numbers were with Riley on the drums, Landon on the trumpet, Jamison on electric guitar, and Trevor on the bells. They sounded really terrific. Jaycie and Alyssa sang together beautifully. Joseph and Asher also did a fun duet. We had a children's choir for a couple numbers. My favorite, I have to admit, was Brynn's solo. She sang a Journeymen song called "Virgin Mary." I had never heard it before. Chris accompanied her. I think Brynn has a natural, folksy way of singing that I find very pleasant. And this was a fun song. I was (as usual) impressed with my husband's talent and ability to play a song perfectly after just getting the cd earlier in the day. How does he do that? Music has always been an important part of my Christmas celebration and I am glad our family has this little tradition of musical service for my grandma and her friends.
