As if they don't get enough school

Sarah and Nathan had finished their school for the day, so I sent them to play while Ammon took a spelling test. After Ammon finished, I went in to find Nathan and Sarah playing what? That's right. Playing school. They had created desks out of overturned toy boxes. Sarah was wearing Ammon's suit jacket and a tie. She was using a lightsaber as a pointer and teaching about snakes. It was pretty cute.

Later, the kids played in the wading pool out back. I sent them in to get dressed while I tidied up the pool toys, lawn chairs, towels, etc. I went in and called to Beth. She still needs help to get dressed, afterall. I found her downstairs. She has, apparently, learned out to undress. So she was standing there in the buff teaching an imaginary classroom. (No, none of her siblings were in the room.) She had the lightsaber and pointed to a poster on the wall and said, "Whatsoever..."

So lonely

For Nathan's 1st birthday, I made him a blanket. All by myself. :) He immediately attached himself to the blanket. He loves it. LOVES IT.

On Monday night, Nathan wandered around the house with a forlorn look on his face. He couldn't find his blankie. He was so sad. Nathan's facial expressions tell all sorts of stories and emotion. The whole family searched and searched. No blanket. I called my sister's house, where Nathan had been earlier that day. No blanket. I didn't think Nathan would go to bed that night. But, luckily for us all, my brother, Michael, was over and cheered Nathan.

Tuesday came. We searched the house. We looked in every nook and cranny. Literally. Couch cushions, the playhouse, the garage, under furniture, in closets, in the bottom of toy boxes, the car, kitchen cupboards, hampers. There was no place left to look. The house is pretty clean; there's not a lot of places to lose something like a blanket. I called Rachel again. No blanket. Nathan called Rachel by himself. No blanket. He kept telling me, "I'm telling you. It's at Rachel's house." I didn't think it was. Midway through the day, Nathan said, "Mom, I'm so lonely without my blanket." The poor kid. He was lost and alone.

In the evening, we went to a thing to meet Chris. I could tell you about the thing, but perhaps you don't want to be bothered with that tangent. When we got home, it was pretty late. Michael came in and said, "Nathan, Rachel called. She found your blanket." Nathan smiled his charming smile and gave me a big hug. A huge hug. It was like the best Christmas morning ever. Unfortunately, it was too late to run over to Rachel's for the blanket. But, Nathan was brave and slept without it again.

Today, Rachel came over bringing the blanket.

Ohh, doesn't he just melt your heart? It's a good thing he's not going to public school. He would have some serious Owen issues.

Disappointment and blessings

Chris and I have spent the last year or so preparing and hoping for Chris to go to grad school in England. We were planning to leave in about a month. We are so close, but in the end, it didn't work out. I am confident that it is God's will that we not go at this time. However, it has been bitterly disappointing for me and it took a while for me to accept. Finally, when I was ready to talk about it, I sent an e-mail to some of my family and a couple of my close friends. I was unprepared for the response.

I had several people tell me that we are in their prayers. These are people who don't use that phrase in its cliche form. My sister-in-law said that she was glad her prayers for me were answered in the form of comfort when I needed it. My other sister-in-law shared her personal (and relatable) experience following God's plan for her and her family. Many shared testimonies of God and the fact that he is aware of us--even me. All shared great compassion and caring for us in our little situation.

While I should know that people pray for me (afterall I pray for other people, too), it still surprised me. I just hadn't thought about it before. I have spent this week feeling very buoyed up knowing this one little thing. I feel very loved. I feel God's love for me. I know that it is often through other people that God shows his love for us. Knowing that I am not alone in my prayers makes me more confident in the answer I've received. God is not just answering my prayers, but many people's.

It has also made me a little less selfish in my own prayers. I have so many people who are constantly in my thoughts, but only sometimes in my prayers. I can do a little better praying for those I care about. It's such a simple thing to do, but it is so unifying and powerful. Because this thing is certain: God answers our prayers.

Thank you so much for your prayers and your love. You know who you are. :)
