"Large snowfalls are uncommon..."

Chris doesn't get a lot of vacation days. So when he does, it's a big deal. I didn't want to waste our holiday by cleaning. (That's what Chris wanted to do.) So, I planned a day trip to Arches. Utah's red rock country may not be Maui, but it would definitely be more pleasant than hanging out up north, right?

From Arches National Park website: "Winters are cold, with highs averaging 30 to 50 F, and lows averaging 0 to 20 F. Though large snowfalls are uncommon (except in nearby mountains), even small amounts of snow or ice can make local trails and roads impassable." Yes, the average high on December 29th is 42 degrees (F). That is totally a vacation temperature to me.

Well, yesterday was not average. We had fun anyway. It's a long way for a day trip (for future reference). We listened to an entire book on cd (The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis). The kids loved the book! And the sites were astounding, amazing, remarkable, and beautiful. We couldn't see very far away. We only took one proper walk. No, we didn't make the effort to hike to Delicate Arch. That would have been foolish. But I got a photo of Ammon with Delicate Arch in the background. Many photos were taken out the window of the car. Would you like to see a couple? Enjoy.

I think we'll have to plan a trip this spring to the arches. We haven't been since I was pregnant with Anna. I had also broken my tailbone the week before. I think we would be able to do more hiking this time around.

Hmm, Arches in summer or Arches in winter? I think Rachel has the right idea: Spring!!! Still, looks like fun. I miss red rocks.
