Mid-Life Philosophy--13

Practically Perfect in Every Way

Have you ever received a compliment that changed the way you did things? One day, my second grade teacher told me I looked pretty in blue. According to my mom, I wore blue every day for the rest of the school year. At a mission conference, my mission president taught us about gifts of the Spirit. There are many spiritual gifts that are not listed in the scriptures. He pointed out a few missionaries and identified some of their specific gifts. He told me, "One of your great gifts is that you are practical."

I've thought a lot about that. It's not the most exciting characteristic. I remember joking with my companion that when I got home from my mission, I'd use it as a pick-up line: "Hey, baby. I'm practical." Once again, I make myself laugh. Even at the time, though, I knew it was desirable. I've embraced being practical.

When I have a choice to make, my decision usually follows the practical path. When Chris or one of the kids suggests a plan or an idea, I find myself agreeing on the basis of the plan's practicality. I guess what I'm trying to say is I value being practical, logical, and simply doing what makes good sense.

It has been a good balance for me to marry Chris, who is impulsive, creative, and emotional. He can help me to see when there is more to life than being practical. Hopefully, I help to tame him a little, because honestly, being practical is a great way to be.
